Unlike a mirror, the Habit Camera records what it sees, your skin condition, so you can show the doctors exactly what’s happening remotely using a simple mobile app.

On Monday, USMC veteran and entrepreneur Derek Herrera launched his medical device startup company Habit Camera, offering a purpose-built flexible wand with an integrated digital camera.

The high-def and WiFi connected camera allows users to easily and accurately monitor their health and transmit photos to health care providers.

“It’s a telehealth tool for anyone at risk of chronic wounds, pressure ulcers, foot ulcers, or other skin conditions that need daily monitoring,” Herrera said. “We want to make skin inspection a habit.”

The patented device was invented at the Minneapolis VA by Dr. Gary Goldish and colleagues at the Minneapolis Adaptive Design & Engineering Program.

Through the VA’s Technology Transfer Program, Herrera secured a patent license allowing for commercialization of the technology (pre-orders will begin in February at www.habit.camera).

As part of the patent agreement, which was finalized in June 2020, Herrera will pay a small royalty on sales of the Habit Camera to the VA to support future research and development activity.
