Derek first learned about Skin Inspection and how important it is after he was shot and paralyzed from the chest down while serving as a Marine Raider in Afghanistan. During rehab at the Tampa VA Hospital, he learned firsthand the challenges associated with wound care and preventing pressure sores. Derek remembers the day he was issued a skin inspection mirror and how hard it was to use effectively.

Seven years later, Derek met researchers at the Minneapolis Adaptive Design & Engineering (MADE) Program at the Minneapolis VA. Researchers there had developed and patented the concept for a low cost, digital tool for skin inspection. Derek worked to establish Paratroop LLC as a certified Service Disable Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) to license the Intellectual Property and bring the Habit Camera to market.

The company is run by Derek and his wife Maura in San Clemente, California. The Habit Camera is proudly designed and assembled in the US by Veterans or Veteran family members. Our goal is to Make Skin Inspection a Habit.
